| The
Tatshenshini and Alsek form Canada's wildest and most spectacular river system. It cuts a broad
swath through the country's highest ranges, the St Elias Mountains, and is fed
along the way by glaciers of mind-boggling grandeur. It is also the most untouched
and protected river, in the world's largest park system. The first part of the
river is broad and swift. Our rafts take you safely and comfortably to the heart
of the Alsek's stunning natural beauty, at the toe of the magnificent Lowell Glacier.
There, you can experience the deep-blue icebergs calving off the Lowell Glacier,
sculpted ice bobbing in wide glacial lakes and the never-ending lure of sweeping
vistas by scaling a mountain. The Alsek valley supports the largest population
of grizzly bears in Canada as well as sizeable populations of mountain goats,
wolves, moose and countless birds. Because we spend quality time in one spot,
our chances of spotting wildlife are better than average. |
| The
Alsek could be a stand-alone adventure, but we travel north to the Dempster Highway
to add another exceptional experience to the trip. The Tombstone Mountains lie
just south of the Arctic Circle, where the boreal forest gradually transforms
into the stark beauty of the sub-arctic tundra. This is the land of sharp peaks,
barren tundra and lichen-clad spruce forests. A beautiful region and in spectacular
contrast to the imposing St Elias mountains. It is a hiking paradise amid some
of the most unique and striking mountain landscapes to be found anywhere. And
with some luck we may spot a herd of caribou! |
