Vancouver Island is a samll world in itself. Rugged coastlines are covered in ancient temperate rainforests. Wildlife is plentiful and tidal pools teem with small colourful creatures. We start our journey in the protected waters of the southern Gulf Islands where, in the rain shadow of the main island, we find a dry and warm climate. We use stable double kayaks to explore the newly created Gulf Islands National Park. Then we turn to Vancouver Island’s alpine side for day hikes through the Strathcona district. Prime vistas and a wonderful diversity in alpine wildflowers. |
For the real unknown, we need to step aboard a ‘Beaver’……. This reliable aviation workhorse will fly us, floats and all, to Nootka Island on the central outer coast. We establish a base camp from which we venture into the rainforest and explore the incredible shores. One of the highest densities of wolves occurs right here. Sea birds and marine mammals abound. This is the island where captain Cook first met the Nootka indians. An unforgettable adventure in an unforgettable location. After our flight out, we travel north and step aboard a sturdy Zodiac boat (with crew) - our mode of transportation for an exploratory trip through Johnstone Strait and the Broughton Archipelago. With the snow capped Coast Mountains as our backdrop we will seek out and observe orca’s, bears in their natural habitat and immerse ourselves in the rich native culture of the area. |
Kayaking, hiking, boating, observing and exploring or simply gazing at all the splendor on our ‘doorstep’ makes this a unique adventure. Really! |
