| The
Torngat are harder to get to than most high arctic regions, yet the area is incredibly
diverse in landscapes and even richer in flora and fauna. Our destination is Saglek
Fjord in the heart of the Torngat Mountains. On the first two days, we travel
by boat through spectacular landscapes - richly toned mountain slopes slashed
by river valleys, magnificent fjords with glistening icebergs and barren islands.
In Saglek, we shoulder our packs and begin a challenging trek through fjordlands
onto tundra plateaus. We will cross small rivers and the border with Quebec. Incredible
scenery, possible sightings of caribou and bear make this the trek of a lifetime. |
| During the trek we will also make a few day hikes from a base
camp. We will be hiking in complete solitude amidst overpowering wilderness. On
our way back to Nain, we stop to visit the abandoned settlement of Hebron, now
a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
Recently, the Torngat became
a part of Canada's National Park system, a joint effort between the federal and
Nunatsiavut governments. NTC has been recognized as a highly experienced operator
in the region and is assisting Parks Canada in its mandate. |
