Bears have huge habitats – grizzly bears have up to 500 square kilometer. So to spot the bear one has to be lucky or have a lot of time.
When the salmon spawn, bears zero in on this rich food source, predictably so. Salmon migration starts in Alaska and ends in Canada around October around southern Vancouver Island. Timing and location are everything.
We look for spots that are lesser known but where chances are great to observe both the migrating salmon and the bears who follow them, and the end of July and August is the right time for it.
